University of Alberta Libraries - Academic Library Internship Program 2011/12

The University of Alberta Libraries invites applications from recent library school graduates interested in pursuing a career in academic libraries.  The internship appointment will be for either a one-year or a two-year term.
The internships are intended to:
  • Provide experience to recent graduates interested in exploring a career in academic libraries
  • Provide an opportunity to discover the multitude of opportunities within an academic library setting
  • Create mentoring and networking opportunities for recent graduates as well as provide for professional development and training
Qualified applicants must:
  • Have graduated from an accredited Canadian library school program in 2010 or 2011

Editorial Intern Position

Evidence Based Library and Information Practice seeks an enthusiastic graduate student from the field of library and information practice who is committed to improving our profession through service and scholarship.  The ideal candidate for the Editorial Intern position will have some knowledge of the publishing field, be proactive, creative, have a good eye for detail, and the ability to meet tight deadlines. This position will suit someone with an interest in evidence based practice and open access.

The Editorial Intern will contribute to the success of Evidence Based Library and Information Practice and gain experience in research publication by assisting the Editorial Team with the following:
  • Soliciting potential manuscripts
  • Promoting / marketing the journal, including calls for volunteers and calls for papers in order to reach a wide and diverse audience
  • Examining proofs for consistency and accuracy prior to publication
  • Updating metadata in the Open Journal Systems software (OJS)
  • Managing administrative information in the OJS
  • Contributing ideas for feature issues and ways to improve the journal
  • Participating in editorial meetings and discussions
Interested persons should send a statement of interest, indicating areas of strength they would bring to the role, as well as a brief resume to Denise Koufogiannakis, Editor-in-Chief, denise.koufogiannakis@ualberta.ca, by April 30, 2011.  This is a voluntary position that will ideally last for 2 years. We anticipate the time commitment to be approximately 10 hours per month.

About the journal

Published quarterly by the University of Alberta, this peer-reviewed, open access journal is targeted at all library and information professionals interested in an evidence based model of practice.  By facilitating access to librarianship research via original research articles and evidence summaries of relevant research from the library literature, Evidence Based Library and Information Practice will enable librarians to practice their profession in an evidence based manner.

The non-union position of Librarian will manage the efficient and effective operation of the large regional health sciences library for use by hospital staff, those with hospital privileges, and students to support clinical and administrative decision making, research and formal and self-directed educational programs.

The ideal candidate will be an organized individual with effective time management, verbal and written communication skills. Required qualifications include successful completion of a Master’s Degree in Library Sciences or in a related field; proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint); recent experience in cataloguing principles and procedures, conventional and computerized references sources and online searching. Experience with current evidence-based and related health and social service literature (print and electronic) along with relevant local, regional, national and international electronic resources is required. Collaboration with all types of healthcare staff, budgeting principles, copyright law and practices, principles and practices of management and information security and safety are also considered requirements of this position.

The ability to support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events in the organizations is required. An excellent attendance and work record is required. A recent Criminal Reference Verification is required for this position. Bilingualism (French/English) is an asset.

Note: A Criminal Reference Verification (recent as of two months) will be required for all external hires as a pre-condition of employment. Current NBGH employees are exempt.

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Chief, Management and Security of Information, the Head of Library Services, manages and administers the National Capital Commission” (NCC) Library to ensure that professional, technical and administrative staff has access to their operational information needs. He/she provides library services for the National Capital Commission by developing and maintaining a library collection standard to ensure library holdings support client requirements and the NCC's mandate. He/she monitors and reports on library activities related to corporate spending and use of the Library collection. What do you have to do?

  • Be interested in reference and virtual reference in particular
  • Be available to participate in virtual training (2 1hr sessions).

What qualifications is askON looking for?

You need to have access to a reliable computer and high-speed Internet. Where will I be working from?

You can work your shift(s) from anywhere, as long as you have access to a computer and the Internet.

Will I be paid for this?

This is a volunteer opportunity. However, the skills you will acquire will serve you well in your job search. Employers love applicants who are already trained in virtual reference and/or have front line reference experience.

When will my shifts occur?

Most intern shifts will be on the weekends and evenings and should not conflict with your classes.

Will I be alone on the service?

No, you will never be alone. Several librarians from public and academic libraries will be online with you, and you will be able to communicate with them and receive support through the staff backchat channel.

Will I be trained?

Yes! We will train you on the software you will use to answer questions, the askON service policies and how to use our staff portal. We will also teach you how to effectively answer reference questions in a virtual environment.

askON Virtual Reference Interns

askON Virtual Reference Interns
Volunteer Internship; 2 hours per week; virtual location

Description
Ask Ontario is the project of Knowledge Ontario (KO) focused on delivering real- time chat reference services for the province. The project successfully launched askON/ONdemande Ontario’s first multi-type, large-scale, bilingual, collaborative virtual reference service in January 2008 and doubled the size of the service by September 2009. askON is seeking to augment our pool of second year MLIS/MLS/MIS candidates or recent graduates who intern with askON/Ondemande and help partner libraries manage the busy traffic on the
virtual reference desk.

Job Summary
Under the direction of the Ask Ontario Project Coordinator and with the supervision and mentorship of askON librarians interns will be given the opportunity to learn and practice their reference skills in a busy collaborative virtual reference service.

Interns will be trained by the askON project team and scheduled for at least two, one-hour shifts per week. There is flexibility within scheduling to fit with school, work and other commitments. Most shifts will be on weekends and evenings and will, as a priority, be in the ONdemande service. Student interns will have full access to the askON staff resources and tools in the staff portal. We are seeking volunteers who can commit to at least one academic term (Sept-Dec 2010) but preferably the entire academic year (Sept 10-April 2011). askON shifts can be filled from any location as long as there is a high-speed Internet connection.

Duties

  • Become familiar with askON service policies and procedures as well as the services and sites of partner libraries
  • Become familiar with RUSA guidelines for good virtual reference interactions and employ them while responding to queries
  • Respond to questions from visitors to askON’s public, college or university service as assigned
  • Identify teaching opportunities and help improve digital literacy and research skills amongst visitors
  • Participate in askON live, virtual and buddy training program(s)

Desired Qualifications

  • Ability to work in French is required as we are seeking interns who can, as a priority, work in the ONdemande service
  • Second year MLS/MLIS/MIS candidate or recent (09 or 10) graduate
  • Familiarity with Scholar’s Portal, Racer, RefWorks and other common academic research tools and resources
  • Familiarity with wide range of publicly available internet resources
  • Familiarity with Knowledge Ontario licensed resources
  • Experience in a public or post-secondary reference environment highly desirable but not required
  • Strong desire to work in a research and reference environment
  • Well developed interpersonal and communication skills
  • Self directed and motivated
  • Experience with Web 2.0 technologies, specifically Skype, IM/SMS, portals and blogs
  • Some familiarity with the askON service
  • Computer and high speed internet connection required
  • Moderate technical ability (able to download web-based software, manage multiple windows)

The archivist manages the archives of CSTMC, which are valued in the millions of dollars. As manager, the archivist is responsible for cataloguing existing textual, film and photo collections, including trade literature, and for acquiring new collections in consultation with the curators and for planning the use of space. The archivist provides archival reference services for internal and external clients. The archivist provides a reproduction service for internal clients, and for external clients of a revenue generating basis. The archivist also manages a preservation program for archival materials.

Qualifications:
As an ideal candidate, you hold a master degree in the history of science and technology and/or information studies with a focus on archival training. A knowledge of Canadian history would be an asset. Five years experience working in a library and archives setting.
