OLA Conference needs Student Volunteers Feb 1-5, 2011

Attention ESIS Students - This is an excellent conference and would be an extremely valuable learning experience for anyone who attends. Note that with volunteering you can reduce your registration cost. There is a career centre and an excellent exhibits area where you can learn a lot quickly about the library and information world. If it wasn't so far, I would suggest a full-day field trip ;-) Bilingual volunteers are welcome! If you have any questions regarding this conference and association, don't hesitate to contact me.

Save the dates! OLA’s Super Conference is the largest library conference in Canada—being held from Wednesday, February 2nd to Saturday, February 5th at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in Toronto. This year’s conference involves almost 300 sessions, meetings and events with over 400 presenters—and YOU are welcome to be part of the excitement!
OLA has a long and mutually beneficial relationship with students enrolled in full-time library programs in Ontario. Volunteering at the annual conference offers you an excellent opportunity to meet future employers, network with library information workers in a wide range of positions, visit the exhibits, and attend workshops. Browse the conference website for the full range of programs and services open to you.
In return for signing up as a volunteer, your conference registration is free and includes all aspects of the conference except the Public Library dinner and the Saturday Gala Luncheon. Tickets for dinner ($65) and the luncheon ($60) can be purchased separately.

Some of the duties you will be performing as a volunteer include:
*giving directional help
*helping out at the registration desk
*preparing conference materials
*handing out and tallying evaluation forms
*changing signage
*assisting in the Speaker's Lounge
*assisting to set-up the OLA Store
*and other tasks that emerge

These duties are rotated among all the volunteers when possible.

Student Success Story / Réussite étudiante : Erin Forward

Congratulations Erin!

One of our very own students, Erin Forward, recently published an article in the fall 2010 issue of OLA Access. The article, Google Maps for indexing aerial photograph collections, discusses the project of converting the card catalogue of the University of Ottawa’s aerial photograph collection held at the Geographic, Statistical, and Government (GSG) Information Centre to an online index. As a part of the project, Google Maps was used to plot a digital representation of each photograph.

Erin is currently a full time student. She has a B.A. in Geography with a concentration in Geomatics and Spatial Analysis from the University of Ottawa. She works as the Cartographic Metadata Analyst at the GSG Information Centre located on the 3rd floor of the Morisset Library, University of Ottawa.

Un de nos propres étudiants, Erin Forward, a récemment publié un article dans le numéro d’automne 2010 de la publication OLA Access. L’article, intitulé «Google Maps for indexing aerial photograph collections», discute du projet de transposition de la collection de photographie aérienne du catalogue sur fiches au Centre d'information géographique, statistique, et gouvernementale (GSG) de l’Université d’Ottawa vers un index numérique sur le Web. Au cours du projet, Google Maps a été utilisé pour schématiser la représentation numérique de chaque photographie.

Erin est étudiante à plein temps. Elle détient un baccalauréat en arts avec spécialisation en géographie et concentration en géomatique et analyse spatial de l’Université d’Ottawa. Erin travaille comme analyste de métadonnées cartographiques au Centre d’information GSG au 3e étage de la Bibliothèque Morisset, à l’Université d’Ottawa.

Library of Parliament tour for students from library science/studies programs in the National Capital Region.

Interested in learning more about the Library of Parliament? 20 students will be able to attend this “behind the scenes” tour of the Library of Parliament. You will learn about being a librarian at the Library of Parliament (eg: clients; types of questions; collection, etc). Then, you will go on a tour of the library premises and learn about the history and architecture of the building.

The Library building, designed in the High Victorian Gothic Revival style by Thomas Fuller and Chilion Jones, opened in 1876. The Library of Parliament offers information, reference and research services to parliamentarians and their staff, parliamentary committees, associations and delegations, and senior Senate and House of Commons officials.

Location: Centre Block, Parliament of Canada, Ottawa, Ontario
Please meet at the security entrance under the Peace Tower at the Centre Block. Please note that there is airport-like security that you are required to go through prior to the tour.

Lush and Learn (a Best Practices Mixer)

LANCR (Library Association of the National Capital Region) and NCALL (National Capital Association of Law Librarians) invite you to a Best Practices Mixer.

We are asking everyone to think of a tip, tool, technique, or resource that has been valuable to them in their work. For example, what works best when dealing with difficult patrons?, what social networking tool is most effective? have a favourite blog?, how do you get the most out of student placements?, what is your best marketing tip?, etc., etc.

At the mixer we'll have you move from small group to small group sharing your best practices. By the end of the session, after rotating through the different groups, we hope you'll have picked up some new ideas and made some new contacts!

Where: Royal Oak Pub, 180 Kent St., at Slater (say you are with the law librarians in order to be seated in the correct area)

Study: "Searching with Tags: Do Tags Help Users Find Things?"

in Knowledge Organization, 2010, vol. 37, n. 4. (In Press)

Summary:
This study examines the question of whether tags can be useful in the process of information retrieval. Participants searched a social bookmarking tool specialising in academic articles (CiteULike) and an online journal database (Pubmed). Participant actions were captured using screen capture software and they were asked to describe their search process. Users did make use of tags in their search process, as a guide to searching and as hyperlinks to potentially useful articles. However, users also made use of controlled vocabularies in the journal database to locate useful search terms and of links to related articles supplied by the database.

UVic digitally preserves 30 years of feminist chronicles

Posted at the request of Lynne Bowker, who says "FYI some good press for archives and their value in teaching and research in today’s issue of the Times-Colonist, in a piece about the 'Victoria Women’s Movement Archives' held at UVic Archives."

Supporters of the Victoria Women's Movement Archives at the University of Victoria are raising money to digitize the collection:
The feminist archives are now celebrating 15 years as one of the only such collections in Canada. The downside: Its logo of a filing cabinet suits the current 30-box collection of paper documents. Which means that researchers or interested parties have to show up in person to use the information or contact an archivist and arrange for copies of what's inside.

Supporters are seeking donations from the public to help put the collection into digital form.

Digital copyright legislation opposed

Win for consumers!

The federal government's proposal to make consumers liable for legal damages of up to $5,000 if they break digital locks to copy movies, video games or electronic books for their own personal use appears dead on arrival -with all three opposition parties speaking out yesterday against this key provision of the Conservative government's copyright bill. Depuis des années, les bibliothécaires constatent l’utilité de permettre aux utilisateurs une participation à l’organisation de l’information proposée en ligne ; en 2007 déjà, le rapport sur les principes de pré-coordination dans les vedettes-matières de la Bibliothèquedu Congrès (LCSH) signalait à plusieurs reprises l’intérêt de l’application des étiquettes d’utilisateurs aux documents dans l’OPAC. Dans une optique de collaboration avec nos utilisateurs, il nous sera utile de considérer leurs attentes par rapport à l’organisation de l’information et à sa manipulation (capacité d’étiqueter, de commenter, de partager et/ou de sauvegarder) sur les sites Web des bibliothèques dans la nouvelle décennie.

Cette communication commencera par un survol de l’état actuel des systèmes d’étiquetage disponibles en ligne et auxquels nos utilisateurs auront eu affaire en tant qu’internautes. Dans un deuxième temps, cette communication recensera les systèmes d’étiquetage disponibles dans les portails de bibliothèques au Canada, aux États-Unis et en Europe. Que permettons-nous aux utilisateurs comparativement aux sites Web au sens plus large, et devrons-nous essayer d’aller encore plus loin en incitant nos utilisateurs à une participation active ?

It’s hard to find good online technology tutorials, especially those for quick and basic computer skills. Harder still to find some that meet our high expectations as information professionals. So why not turn to the library world itself?

Below is a collection of my top 5 favorite sites for these quick computer training materials. These could be webinars, class handouts, tutorials, screencasts, you name it. What’s important is the content. It’s content I’m comfortable pointing a customer or a fellow staff member to if some core computer fundamental skills need improving. Weirdly, two institutions get two mentions apiece — but that’s because what they have is awesome. Browse through what they have, and you might be surprised to find there’s something there for you too!

The Library of the Supreme Court of Canada provides the research base for the Court in its role of deciding questions of national importance. It is a research library geared to meet the immediate information needs of the Court.

Medical Libraries Tour for students from library science/studies programs in the National Capital Region

Medical Libraries

Come and explore the many facets of medical librarianship by visiting four medical libraries, two that serve healthcare professionals and two that provide information services to patients and their families.

This tour takes advantage of the close proximity of the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and the General Campus of The Ottawa Hospital. Both locations have a patient library and a staff library. The Ottawa Hospital portion of the tour will explain more generally what types of services medical libraries provide while the CHEO portion of the tour will explore searching the medical literature in more detail.

World’s biggest book’ goes on sale for $100,000

An Australian publisher unveiled what he says is the biggest book in the world Wednesday, seemingly in a bid to steal the spotlight from his digital rivals.


The 6-by-9 foot atlas titled “EARTH, Platinum edition” will sell for $100,000, Gordon Cheers, managing director of the publishing company of Millennium House, told the AFP, and he’s limiting the print run to 31 copies. The tome features massive maps that encompass entire continents as well as sharp images of famous locations. Read more...

Les étudiants peuvent y assister au prix de 75 $ (accès à tout, sans restriction), ou ils peuvent simplement assister aux ateliers GRATUITEMENT s'ils sont déjà membres d'organisations partenaires (la SLA, l'ASTED, etc.).

OU BIEN - et ceci est ce qu'il y a de plus excitant - les étudiants ont aussi l'option de s'offrir comme bénévole pour une demi-journée et puis assister à des sessions durant l'autre moitié de leur journée! Les tâches décrites ne sont pas exigeantes: participer à l'accueil des participants, des petites tâches variées, aide technique dans les pièces de présentation, etc.

La GSAÉD vous invite à sa 14e conférence interdisciplinaire qui se tiendra les 2, 3 et 4 mars prochains à l’Université d’Ottawa sous le thème État de nature. Ce colloque bilingue s’inscrit dans une logique d’interdisciplinarité et vise à enrichir la réflexion et les discussions sur des thèmes qui nous touchent tous. Lorsque pris dans son actualité, le concept d’état de nature amène une foule de questions concernant autant la nature et l’environnement que l’organisation sociale et le vivre ensemble.
Dans le cadre de l’évènement de cette année, nous invitons donc les étudiant(e)s inscrits aux études supérieures à venir présenter toute recherche s’inscrivant dans cette thématique qui appelle les réflexions sur :
  • Les percées technologiques et la gestion environnementale ;
  • Les impacts des changements climatiques ;
  • La cohésion et l'exclusion sociale ;
  • La place de l'individu au sein de la société ;
  • Les politiques publiques et le vivre ensemble ;

The GSAÉD invites you to its 14th interdisciplinary conference, which will take place on March 2, 3, and 4, 2011, at the University of Ottawa, under the theme of State of Nature. With the idea of interdisciplinarity at its core, this bilingual event seeks to encourage reflection and discussion of themes that affect us all. When taken as a whole, the concept of state of nature brings forward a wealth of questions concerning a wide range of subjects, from nature and the environment to social organization and interpersonal relations.

As part of this year's event, we therefore wish to encourage graduate students to present any research that falls under the theme outlined above and that promotes reflection on subjects such as:
  • Technological innovations & the environment;
  • Climate change and its impacts;
  • Social cohesion and exclusion;
  • The place of the individual in society;
  • Public policies;
  • Environmental law;
  • Scientific innovations;
  • Biodiversity;
  • Nature as a source of artistic inspiration;
  • Links between social change and artistic creation;
  • Cultural diversity;
  • Ethics;
  • Social and individual security and integrity;
  • Etc.

 Participants are expected to present their research in either French or English. Each conference must not exceed 15 minutes, and will be followed by a 10 minute question period. Proposals must include the presenter's discipline and level of study, as well as an abstract no longer than 300 words.

Il se peut que des installations sportives deviennent disponibles aux étudiants au campus Lees.

Lynne Bowker a communiqué auprès du Service des sports au nom des étudiants et des professeurs :

«J'ai parlé avec quelqu'un du Service des sports et il m’a dit qu’en effet ils envisagent d'organiser quelque chose pour nous ici, mais qu’ils aimeraient savoir quels types d'activités sont d'intérêt à notre groupe (par exemple, cours d'aérobie, le yoga, le badminton, le volleyball, etc. ), et si nous profiterions effectivement de ces programmes et quand.»

Nous avons besoin de la rétroaction de la part des étudiants :

1) Quel genre de programmes d’activité physique vous intéresseraient? Quelques possibilités incluent des cours d'aérobie ou de yoga, du badminton et du volleyball. Avez-vous d'autres suggestions ou activités préférées?
2) Pensez-vous que vous alliez utiliser les installations sportives à Lees se elles vous étaient disponibles?

There is a possibility of sport facilities being made available to students at Lees Campus.

Lynne Bowker has been talking to Sports Services on behalf of students and Faculty:

“I spoke with someone in Sports Services, and he said that they would indeed consider organizing something for us out here, but they would like to know what types of activities are of interest (e.g. aerobics class, yoga, badminton, volleyball, etc.), and whether anyone would actually avail of such programs and when.”

We need to hear from students:

1) What kind of sport/fitness programs interest you? Some possibilities include yoga, aerobics, badminton and volleyball. Do you have other suggestions or favourite activities?
2) Would you use the sports facilities at Lees if they were available?
3) What days and times would work best for you?

PROJECT OF HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE

The presentation will review the history of the Library’s conception by the ancient
Greeks, show artist renditions of its architecture, give an overview of the classification
system devised by its founders, and the overall significance and meaning of the library in
its times. It will also discuss the philosophical and architectural concept of the new
library that was inaugurated in 2002 practically on the same site as the Greek library built
2300 years ago in the city of Alexandria. The symbolism adopted in the architecture, the
international effort led by UNESCO to ensure international participation in the project,
and the meaning of the new library to the world and today’s Egypt, will also be
discussed.

La Faculté s’engage dans un processus de planification stratégique quinquennal en constituant cinq tables de concertation. Chacune de ces tables se compose de deux coprésidents (dont au moins un directeur), un membre du comité de gestion, trois professeurs réguliers, et autres membres désignés ci-après.

As part of its 5-year strategic planning process, the Faculty is setting up five consultation tables. What do you have to do?

Where will I be working from?

You can work your shift(s) from anywhere, as long as you have access to a computer and the Internet.

Will I be paid for this?

This is a volunteer opportunity. However, the skills you will acquire will serve you well in your job search. Employers love applicants who are already trained in virtual reference and/or have front line reference experience.

When will my shifts occur?

Most intern shifts will be on the weekends and evenings and should not conflict with your classes.

Will I be alone on the service?

No, you will never be alone. Several librarians from public and academic libraries will be online with you, and you will be able to communicate with them and receive support through the staff backchat channel.

Will I be trained?

Yes! We will train you on the software you will use to answer questions, the askON service policies and how to use our staff portal. We will also teach you how to effectively answer reference questions in a virtual environment.

askON Virtual Reference Interns

Volunteer Internship; 2 hours per week; virtual location

Description
Ask Ontario is the project of Knowledge Ontario (KO) focused on delivering real- time chat reference services for the province. The project successfully launched askON/ONdemande Ontario’s first multi-type, large-scale, bilingual, collaborative virtual reference service in January 2008 and doubled the size of the service by September 2009. askON is seeking to augment our pool of second year MLIS/MLS/MIS candidates or recent graduates who intern with askON/Ondemande and help partner libraries manage the busy traffic on the
virtual reference desk.

Job Summary
Under the direction of the Ask Ontario Project Coordinator and with the supervision and mentorship of askON librarians interns will be given the opportunity to learn and practice their reference skills in a busy collaborative virtual reference service.

Interns will be trained by the askON project team and scheduled for at least two, one-hour shifts per week. There is flexibility within scheduling to fit with school, work and other commitments. Most shifts will be on weekends and evenings and will, as a priority, be in the ONdemande service. Student interns will have full access to the askON staff resources and tools in the staff portal. We are seeking volunteers who can commit to at least one academic term (Sept-Dec 2010) but preferably the entire academic year (Sept 10-April 2011). askON shifts can be filled from any location as long as there is a high-speed Internet connection.

Duties

  • Become familiar with askON service policies and procedures as well as the services and sites of partner libraries
  • Become familiar with RUSA guidelines for good virtual reference interactions and employ them while responding to queries
  • Respond to questions from visitors to askON’s public, college or university service as assigned
  • Identify teaching opportunities and help improve digital literacy and research skills amongst visitors
  • Participate in askON live, virtual and buddy training program(s)

Desired Qualifications

  • Ability to work in French is required as we are seeking interns who can, as a priority, work in the ONdemande service
  • Second year MLS/MLIS/MIS candidate or recent (09 or 10) graduate
  • Familiarity with Scholar’s Portal, Racer, RefWorks and other common academic research tools and resources
  • Familiarity with wide range of publicly available internet resources
  • Familiarity with Knowledge Ontario licensed resources
  • Experience in a public or post-secondary reference environment highly desirable but not required
  • Strong desire to work in a research and reference environment
  • Well developed interpersonal and communication skills
  • Self directed and motivated
  • Experience with Web 2.0 technologies, specifically Skype, IM/SMS, portals and blogs
  • Some familiarity with the askON service
  • Computer and high speed internet connection required
  • Moderate technical ability (able to download web-based software, manage multiple windows)

Is information management a dying art?

In today’s outsourced, disposable society, public and private sector organizations may be tempted to trust technology to manage our information assets. In addition, if it were not for the requirement to comply, we might very well ignore Information Management (IM) all together!

This session will present the argument that IM as a discipline may no longer be needed due to advances in technology. Driving factors behind IM, and generational and behavioural issues, will also be discussed. Audience participation will be encouraged so that the premise, “IM Is Dead”, can be refuted or supported.

Here are some “generally useful web sites” that were briefly mentioned at the Orientation Day info-session:

Some professors use Blackboard as a web-tool for communicating with students, distributing grades, quizzes, handing out course material etc.

InfoWeb
The InfoWeb site at the university of Ottawa is the web-vehicle for "secure" services (personal information / grades etc.) http://www.uottawa.ca/students/ -> InfoWeb

UOzone
UOzone is a personalized portal created by the University of Ottawa which provides personalized information and alerts from professors, faculty in a single-sign-one environment. http://uozone.uottawa.ca/

Email
Last year, the School set up a Google Groups mailing list to which students, faculty and alumni could subscribe (or unsubscribe). This Google Groups mailing list will be discontinued as a method for faculty to communicate announcements to students. In the future, faculty announcements will be made via the school mailing list which only contains UOttawa mailing addresses. Therefore:

Some courses may use a blogs as a method of communicating course-material (as an alternative to Blackboard)

Other courses will be requiring you to learn how to use Wikis so that students can collaboratively create documents or resources together, e.g. http://www.wikispaces.com/

New Copyright Rules in the US

From Crunch Gear: "It’s no longer illegal under the DMCA to jailbreak your iPhone or bypass a DVD’s CSS in order to obtain fair use footage for educational purposes or criticism." Read the list of new rules for a complete breakdown of how things have changed.

Micheal Geist also wrote an article addressing the changes and contrasting them with Canada's new rules under C-32, arguing that Canada's rules are more restrictive than they need to be.

Get rid of the reference desk?!

The Library at McMaster University has done away with their reference desk and introduced "blended services" which allow their patrons to go to one desk for all their library needs - circulation and reference.

What do you think? Is this a good idea? Or, at the risk of being overly dramatic here, is this the end of the world? How important is a separate reference desk at an academic library?
